The Art of Fashion

December 2011

When Elle US showcased 27 magnificent pieces of art – from fashion and shoes to jewellery and luggage – we just had to share our favourites. We are happy to say some of the creative minds behind these works have already been featured on our blog – you’ll remember Charlotte Olympia, Chanel’s new clutch bags and our ode to Christopher Kane. Here are the pieces that got our creativity going.

Charlotte Olympia

She’s the stiletto society’s new obsession, and we can see why Elle US loves her and her creative shoe aesthetic.

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen

“This gown made of mother-of-pearl and white shells with a pearl-embroidered tulle skirt transformed the model into a couture-worthy sea creature. The shells were drilled and individually sewn by hand onto the dress, proving hard work really does pay off.” (via www.elle.com)

Tom Binns

The combination of electric colours and a traditional cameo brooch is wonderful.

Dolce & Gabbana

“At the finale of Dolce & Gabbana’s spring runway show, a band of models marched down the catwalk in varying elastic bodices, entirely hand-embroidered with Swarovski stones and plastic beads in different colors. For the designers, this bodysuit is a tribute to their iconic shows of the ’90s, and inspiration for the bodices came from the sexiness of pinups and the glitter of beauty pageants.” (via www.elle.com)

Jordan Askill

“The young British jewelry designer created this resin piece using a combination of artisan techniques and 3-D imaging processes.” (via www.elle.com)

Sarah Jane Williams

This suitcase belongs anywhere BUT a conventional conveyer belt… a chartered jet is an absolute necessity if you decide to travel with this bespoke leather-and-brass suitcase produced entirely by hand.

Christopher Kane

A garden delight by one of our favourite designers of 2012.

Mary Katrantzou

Another fashion obsession on our side, Mary Katrantzou’s pioneering digital printing techniques have set the world of fashion on a vivid journey.

Giles Deacon

This silver laser cut dress makes you look more than once…

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

“Lagerfeld used mesh and silicone to replicate the look of coral on a chain-strap bag in the sea-themed spring collection.” (via www.elle.com)

Balmain

Gorgeous embroidery on this signature Balmain silhouette.

Louis Vuitton

When Marc Jacobs unveiled his pastel coloured carousel he showcased delicate organza, dreamy parasols and that gorgeous monogram LV print.
