Karl Lagerfeld – King of Collaboration

He is Chanel’s creative everything, the designing force at Fendi, the name behind his eponymous label and in between churning out beautiful and inspirational collections season after season for both prestigious houses and partnering with Net-a-Porter as he gets ready to launch a diffusion (masstige) line of his Karl Lagerfeld collection at the beginning of 2012, Mr Lagerfeld still finds time to do collaborations with some of the world’s leading brands.

His latest venture sees him teaming up with watchmaker Fossil for an exclusive collection of male and female timepieces sold under the Karl Lagerfeld label. According to WWD Pier Paolo Righi, president of Karl Lagerfeld, says of the collaboration “It is essential for us to work with the best license partners in each segment — that is why we are happy to partner up with Fossil.” After reading about this brand new Lagerfeld venture we decided to take a step back into time and look at some of our beloved Karl Lagerfeld collaborations. As a modern day artist Lagerfeld once said “What I enjoy most is something I have never done before,” and this enjoyment he gets out of his diverse relationships is evident in the success and admiration each and every initiative receives. Here are some of our favourites:

Karl Lagerfeld for Coke Light

In 2011 he teamed up with Coca-Cola for a limited edition Coke Light bottle printed with his legendary silhouette.

Karl Lagerfeld for H&M

As one of the first designers to collaborate with H&M, Lagerfeld designed a range for the Swedish retailer in 2004 that sold out within 2 days.

Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s

Mid 2011 Lagerfeld designed a capsule collection for the Impulse department within American superstore Macy’s.

Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld

Last year Lagerfeld created a range of crystal wear for Orrefors – and you can really see his clean, modern signature in the collection and the black just speaks volumes of its creator!

“The thing about Karl is that he is never happy with what he’s done. However perfect that dress it already begs a question of the next thing. The moment the show opens, he’s already foreseeing the actual set of the next one. This man never alights. He’s on the wing. Photographs, buildings, collections, possessions.” – Chanel muse Amanda Harlech
